Third-ranked SPVB 16 Elite wins JVA World Challenge 16 Open title

Note: SPVB 18 Elite went 8-1 and finished third in the 18 Open division at the JVA World Challenge last weekend at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. After starting 8-0, SPVB 18 Elite lost to TAV (Texas Advantage Volleyball) 18 Black 25-21, 16-25, 17-15 in a Gold bracket semifinal. “TAV is a big, physical team,” Sports Performance girls director Erik Vogt said. “We struggled to get around their block.” Asics Munciana 18 Samurai rolled past TAV 25-12, 25-22 in the finals to win the division.

Next: USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships Friday-Sunday, April 27-29, 2018, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

3. Uno Girls 18 Elite (4)
Note: Uno Girls 18 Elite opened the JVA World Challenge with eight consecutive wins,  seven of those in straight sets, before falling to Asics Munciana 18 Samurai 25-22, 25-21 in a Gold bracket semifinal of the 18 Open division. Included in its run to the Gold semifinals was a 25-23, 25-20 victory over Illini Elite 18 Cardinal. Uno Girls 18 Elite tied for third.

4. Illini Elite 18 Cardinal (3)
Note: Illini Elite 18 Cardinal went 3-4 and tied for ninth place in the 18 Open division at the JVA World Challenge last weekend at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.  Among its loses was a 25-17, 25-18 decision to eventual champion Asics Munciana 18 Samurai.

Note: Fusion 17 Red went 6-2 and tied for third place in the 17 Open division at the JVA World Challenge last weekend at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Fusion 17 Red reached the Gold semifinals before falling to eventual runner-up Tri-State Elite 18 Blue 28-26, 25-19.

Note: Illini Elite 17 Cardinal went 2-5 and tied for 11th place in the 17 Open division of the JVA World Challenge last weekend at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.  Illini Elite 17 Cardinal bowed out of the tournament following a 32-30, 25-22 loss to CUVC 17 Premier in a Silver bracket semifinal.

Note: Sky High Adidas 16 Black was 5-2 through two days of the 2018 Asics Show Me Qualifier in Kansa City, Missouri, and scheduled to play Nebraska Elite 16 Vici in a Silver bracket semifinal Monday at 11:00 a.m. Sky High Adidas 16 Black’s two losses were a 25-17, 26-24 decision to H Skyline 16 Royal, which was 7-0 in the tournament heading into Monday’s play, and a 25-20, 25-20 loss to Palm Beach Jrs. 16 Elite, one of three teams remaining in contention for a trickle-down bid.

3. SPVB 16 Elite (3)
Note: SPVB 16 Elite finished 8-1 and defeated Asics KIVA 16 Red 25-20, 25-19 to win the 16 Open division of the JVA World Challenge last weekend at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. “Kate Long and Maddie Meyers led us with 11 and 10 kills, respectively,” SPVB 18 Elite coach Erik Vogt said. “(Libero) Hattie Monson had a fantastic match. She was a big difference defensively. Collectively, it was our best passing and serving match all year.” SPVB 16 Elite’s lone hiccup was a 26-24, 19-25, 15-9 loss to Tri-State Elite 16 Blue in the second round of Gold pool play. Tri-State Elite 16 Blue was ousted in the Gold semifinals by Asics KIVA 16 Red.

Note: SPVB 16 C-Fed went 5-3 and finished 13th in the 16 Open division at the JVA World Challenge last weekend at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky.  SPVB 16 C-Fed lost to Vision 16 Indy Elite 25-20, 23-25, 15-13 in the second round of Gold pool play, than fell 15-13 to Vision in a challenge match to reach the Silver bracket.

Note: Lions 15-1 finished 5-3 at the 2018 Asics Show Me Qualifier April 7-9 in Kansas, City, Missouri, losing 25-18, 25-15 to Coast 15-1 in its finale. After starting 5-0, Lions 15-1 suffered two tough back-to-back losses, falling 15-13 in the third set against SG Elite Roshambo 15-1 late Saturday and 15-13 in the third set to Sunshine 15 Westside early Sunday. Both clubs are out of Southern California.
